If you’d think about the most used tool in your kitchen, what would it be? Probably the knives. We use them to chop, slice, dice, cut and so many more things. But how do you know the ones that you actually need? Having the right knives can make a world of difference in your cooking experience. But there are so many different kinds that it can get overwhelming. This is why we created a guide with the most essential knives we all need in our kitchen.

Chef’s knife

This will be the most used knife in the kitchen and do most of the slicing and dicing. It is commonly used for quickly and efficiently chopping vegetables or slicing both raw and cooked meats or dicing ingredients like tomatoes, bell peppers, and potatoes into uniform cubes. The flat side of the blade can also be used to crush garlic cloves or ginger.

Bread knife

The serrations, or "teeth," allow the knife to cut through bread without crushing or tearing it meaning it doesn't require nearly as much downward pressure. These knives are essential for slicing various types of bread and delicate pastries, with ease and precision. Whether you're enjoying a hearty artisanal loaf or a tender brioche, a bread knife ensures a clean and precise cut. Additionally, they are a good option for slicing juicy fruits and vegetables like tomatoes.

Santoku Knife

This a Japanese-style knife with a broad blade and a slightly curved edge, very similar to a chef’s knife but usually shorter. It is excellent for slicing thin cuts of meat, dicing onions and other vegetables, and mincing herbs and garlic with control and accuracy.

Paring Knife

The blade is straight and narrow, tapering to a pointed tip, which allows for precision and control. This is perfect for delicate tasks such as peeling the skin off fruits and vegetables like apples and potatoes, trimming unwanted parts such as the stems of strawberries or the tops of bell peppers, and segmenting citrus fruits. It's also ideal for removing seeds from cucumbers or bell peppers, coring apples and tomatoes, and making decorative garnishes. Additionally, a paring knife is perfect for deveining shrimp, slicing small ingredients like garlic cloves or cherry tomatoes, and hulling strawberries.

An extra tip to always maintain the sharpness and effectiveness of kitchen knives is to have a knife sharpener, an essential tool for maintaining the performance and longevity of your knives.
